THE PRESIDENT:  Good morning, everybody.  We are in the middle of a tough fight to get our economy growing faster, so that businesses across our country can open and expand, so that people can find good jobs, and so that we can repair the terrible damage that was done by the worst recession in our lifetimes.  Today we received some encouraging news.

 

It's All About Jobs, Jobs, Jobs

Ambassador Ron KirkIt's all about creating jobs to turn around the mood the country.

 

That's what Ambassador Ron Kirk, the U.S. Trade Representative, said during an informal meeting with media at a Dallas restaurant. The former Dallas Mayor said President Obama is frustrated that job creation hasn't happened quicker, but he remains undeterred.

 

Subsidized jobs: A faint echo of the New Deal

In rural Winston County, Mississippi, Taylor Machine Works — best known for its Big Red forklifts — is the primary employer. After the recession hit in late 2008, the company shed nearly 200 of its 500 jobs and would not be rehiring anyone now if it weren’t for a subsidized employment program Mississippi launched with the help of federal stimulus money.
