Constitutional Right vs. Unwise Hype

By Deborah Williams
Any conscious person who’s been watching the political horizon and social landscape over the past month can see the fomenting turbulence surrounding the President.  He decided to uphold the U.S. Constitution by affirming the right of Muslim clerics to construct a mosque and Islamic community center in lower Manhattan just blocks from where thousands were massacred by twisted radicals who claimed Islam.

In spite of the reasonable alarm, any astute observer can recognize the hoopla initiated by ignorance of U.S. Constitutional law, emotionally irrational politicians and by the gravely misleading major media. America, what’s up? Is there anyone left who knows the Constitution’s mandate for freedom of religion? Have our elected officials assumed the business of Constitutional manipulation in lieu of intelligent negotiation? Has the American public succumbed to the media imposed stupor restricting individual ability to read and comprehend the Laws of the Land?

For those who haven’t a clue, the 1st Amendment to the United States Constitution mandates that:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

As quiet as it’s kept, President Obama did not write any part of the United States Constitution. He is simply obliged under oath to appropriate its Statutes for the posterity of democratic liberties afforded to all as established by the Constitution. And, as with every other President, President Obama was sworn in to the tune of "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States”; as set forth in Article II, Section1, of the US Constitution. So, in spite of the sensitive matter at hand Mr. President has only affirmed what he’s been elected to avow.

As with the President, it’s presumed that elected officials are aware of United States Constitutional statutes. Therefore, political aggression against the President for upholding the Constitution is nothing more than intentional ignorance. Any politician guilty of such should be voted out of office at first chance.

At this point, the sensible means to a much needed resolution is tactical negotiation by decision makers of both sides.
Intelligent negotiation is a preservative of social harmony; and simply put, it’s wisdom.
