Both Glenn Back and the Rev. Al Sharpton owe Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King an apology.
Yesterday's converging marches on Washington made me cringe, and I'm sure Dr. King would have, too. In his "I Have a Dream" Speech", King called for harmony among all Americans based on the 'content of their character, not the color of their skin." King didn't use his speech to make "race" the issue as much as he made civility, justice and equality the driving principles. He used his speech as a platform to shame America, using the language that many of this nation's Founding Fathers used to create a new nation. King stood at the feet of Lincoln Monument, recognizing the president who - warranted or not - made racial equality a national issue - not a black-white issue.
From where I sit, neither Beck nor Sharpton did anything to advance this country's existence as a land of tolerance, acceptance and understanding. Both men used their bully pulpits to criticize each other - directly and indirectly - for taking this country down the wrong path. Both men tried to claim the day "their" own when King would have wanted them to use the event o challenge the American spirit to set aside the differences and work together to change the country - not using separate media-driven events that created nothing more than sound bites.
What this country doesn't need to do is relive images of angry mobs of people yelling and shouting each other about racial differences. Unfortunately, until the economy turns around, the tension in America will grow as jobs remain scarce.
My advice to Beck, Shartpon and each of their respective camps is to read King's speech over again. If they truly understand it, then both campus would decide to fight together ro reignite this country's economy improving lives for everyone, and not allow themselves to drown in their ideology.
