Here's my suggestion for next week's debate in Hofstra: No talking points, no stump speeches. Moderator Bob Schieffer should have the option to cut either candidate off if they use any buzz word or phrase from the previous two debates.
Ok, a bit preposterous, but you get my point. The reaction from many people watching tonight's debate, based on flippling around the networks and cable TV talking head shows, seemed pretty unanimous: Neither candidate shed any new light on how they will right this country. No "change we believe in" or "country first" resonated with folks who are losing money, losing jobs, losing retirement savings and have no confidence in any elected official or corporate CEO.
Next week, the candidates need to sit across the table from each other and define one specific policy and programs they will actually do. Quite honestly, if you analyze the transcripts of any of these debates, you'll find that Obama and Biden have been painfully specific while McCain and Palin are stuck on their campaign's buzz words.
In less than a month, we'll have a new president. Few of the promises or plans McCain or Obama are talking about will ever see the light of day. The nation's and world's events will be so overwhelming it will be hard enough for either man to leave an imprint - until their second term.
What will make me - and I'm sure many Americans - feel much better about the man we vote for is getting the candidates to talk to ME. I'm tired of both McCain and Obama trying to motivate their constituencies by repeating campaign rhetoric, hate and fear mongering.
