Before the noise of Rev. Jeremiah Wright's incendiary remarks reverberated so loudly they could no longer be ignored, the Obama campaign was the embodiment of fanatical hope, unimaginable idealism, untethered energy and prophetic change.
Now the Obama's campaign is virtually defunct as Wright's crusade to defend the Black church and himself surges forward. Nevertheless, Obama owes it to his supporters (me!) to fight harder. I said it, "harder!"
Certainly, Obama is exhausted from the seemingly endless hours of campaigning, but who isn't? We are all tired of these damn primaries. Fatigue is no excuse. Obama better kick it up a notch if he plans to capture the Democratic nomination.
The dramatization that is Obama and Jeremiah Wright is a political examination designed to test Obama's character. Clinton has already proved that she's a fighter, winning in Pennsylvania, regaining her momentum and vowing not to quit. Obama has to prove that he is as relentless as she is. Obama can't get knocked out of this race by the very same pastor that inspired him to get in it (note: Audacity to Hope is one of Wright's sermons).
If Wright's so-called defense of the Black church is loud and thunderous, Obama needs to roar even more vociferously to get his message on the issues across. If Rev. Wright makes headlines, Obama needs to make more.
Obama is a south side dude. I know that he can take a hit or two. What I don't know is whether or not he can fight back. When I look at the high fuel prices, record-high food prices, unemployment and home foreclosures, I need to know that the person in Washington advocating on my behalf is a fighter and not a chump. If Obama can't control his friends, how will he handle his enemies?
To recapture the imaginations of American voters, Obama must go back to the basics: change, "yes we can" enthusiasm and transformative unity.
Say it with me, "YES WE CAN!"
Yes, we can: drown out the rhetoric of Rev. Wright. Yes, we can: reinvigorate the masses with a campaign that condemns politricks as usual. Yes, we can: inspire a new generation of voters to believe in the impossible. Yes, WE CAN WIN.
Despite "bitter" White, working-class voters and haters in general, Obama still has the most states and the most pledged delegates.
