The election of Barack Obama forces the country to look at people of color and ethnicity in a new light and to begin a new conversation about dropping old labels and adopting new ones.

In this final stretch of the presidential campaigns, a lot of focus has been on those voters who have not made up their minds who they want for president.

Could it be that Senator John McCain and the Republican Party have made peace with the gay and lesbian community — but not the Latino community?

It would appear so given the mutual love fest between the two.

The word is that, after being distracted by the "Palin Effect," the Obama campaign is back on track to focus on what this election is all about — the issues.

It's no secret that the Republican Party wants the Latino vote. According to the McCain campaign's spokeswoman for Hispanic media, Hessy Fernandez, the campaign's goal is to secure 45% of the Latino vote.

Not even the announcement of Sen. Joe Biden as Barack Obama's running mate could minimize the long shadow cast by Hillary Clinton over the Democratic National Convention.

Last week, Homeland Security had a change of mind about building the infamous Texas-Mexico border fence in Presidio, Texas.

A change of mind NOT a change of heart.

Running for the presidency of the United States can make a person do some weird stuff — like changing positions on an issue which at one time was considered the right thing to do and suddenly is considered to be too sympathetic to a constituency under attack.

The intention of Immigration and Customs Enforcement to criminalize all undocumented immigrants caught living in the United States illegally has reached a saturation point with courts in the southwest region of the country.
