Haiti deserves American relief, not an ugly American’s curses

The Rev. Pat Robertson needs a history lesson about Haiti.

Koch rebuilt N.Y., often at the expense of blacks, poor

By Wayne Dawkins

I last saw iconic New York Mayor Ed Koch in mid-August in the green room of NY1 cable TV. Koch was about to do his segment as one of the three “Wise Guys” [Eliot Spitzer and Alfonse D’Amato] who talk about politics. I was there to be interviewed about my book on Andrew W. Cooper, the black newspaper publisher whose City Sun of Brooklyn needled the mayor and Koch never missed an opportunity to jaw back.

President Obama’s next choice for the Supremes?

By Wayne Dawkins

WASHINGTON -- Now that President Barack Obama was elected to serve through January 2017, it is likely he will replace one, even two U.S. Supreme Court Justices. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second woman appointed to the court and a Democratic appointee, is approaching 80 and is a two-time cancer survivor. She is likely to retire soon.

So who might Obama pick? Suggestions?

Suspect voter ID laws still a problem in many states

By Wayne Dawkins

WASHINGTON -- On Election Day, remarkable things happened. Barack Obama was re-elected president despite attempts by the Republican opposition to buy an election via hundreds of millions of dollars from a cabal of plutocrats, or, steal the election through onerous schemes intended to discourage certain demographic groups from voting.

Regarding the latter phenomenon, many voters waited an hour or more to cast ballots and ensure their voices were heard.

Virginia came through again for Obama

By Wayne Dawkins

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – At 6:10 a.m. I arrived at polling place Grove Baptist Church and at least 150 people formed an S-shaped line around the parking lot and into the front door. The line crawled slowly, yet orderly. In the 40-degree chill, I studied the faces of voters. The expressions were patient, and resolute. It was imperative that Barack Obama was returned to the White House.
